How to translate Google Meet in real time — for free

Google Meet can show captions in the language being spoken, but translating them into your language is locked behind a paid Workspace plan. If you are on a personal Gmail or a small team, here is how to get live translated subtitles anyway.

Why Meet does not translate for free

Google Meet gives everyone live captions, but translated captions — the same speech rendered in another language — are a Workspace feature. They require Google Workspace Business Standard or higher and are not available on free or personal Google accounts.

So if you join an English call and want to read it in Spanish, Russian or Hindi, Meet will not do it unless your organization pays for the right plan.

Option 1: Meet’s built-in translated captions (paid)

If your workspace is on a qualifying plan, an admin can turn on translated captions. In a call, open Settings, then Captions, enable captions, and choose the language to translate into. It covers a fixed set of languages and only works while your account stays on the paid tier.

Option 2: a browser extension that hears the call

The other way — one that works on any account, including free Gmail — is a browser extension that listens to the meeting tab itself, recognizes the speech, and shows a translated caption overlay on your screen.

What to look for
