Google Meet’s translation is locked behind a paid plan.

Meet only offers translated captions on Google Workspace Business Standard and up. On a free account there is still no translation at all, and the only personal path is Google AI Pro at around $20 a month — a subscription to all of Gemini, of which meeting translation is one feature. Translated captions in Google Meet without Workspace

Meet gives everyone live captions in the language being spoken. Turning those captions into your language is a different feature: it needs Google Workspace Business Standard or higher, and an administrator has to allow it. On a free Gmail account, or on Workspace Starter, the setting is simply not in the menu.

Trippi does not go through that menu at all. It listens to the meeting tab, runs its own speech recognition, and puts a translated line under every sentence. The capability arrives with the extension instead of with a plan upgrade, which is why it works the same on a personal account and on a corporate one.

It reads the audio, not Meet’s caption box

Most Google Meet translation extensions scrape the caption text Meet already draws on screen and push it through a translator. That inherits every mistake the caption box makes, and it goes blank the moment the host turns captions off or the layout changes.

Trippi takes the tab audio directly, so it does not care whether Meet captions are on. You get the recognised line and its translation together, which also makes it obvious when a name or a term was misheard — the thing you cannot check when only the translation is shown.

Nothing joins your call

No bot appears in the participant list, no recording banner shows up, and nothing asks for access to your calendar or Drive. The overlay is drawn inside your browser and is visible only to you: for everyone else the meeting looks exactly as it did.

Schools on the free tier get nothing

Education is where this gap is widest, because the free edition is the one schools actually run. Meet’s translated captions live on Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and AI Pro for Education — Education Fundamentals, the no-cost edition, does not include them. So the classrooms with the most language variety in the room are the ones with no translation available at any setting.

Trippi does not go through the school’s licence. A student turns it on in their own browser, picks their own language, and the teacher does not have to request anything from a district administrator.
