Zoom’s translated captions are a paid add-on.

Zoom charges extra for translated captions. Trippi translates your Zoom calls in the browser, free to start — no admin, no add-on.

Why Zoom does not translate your meeting

Zoom ships live transcription broadly, but translated captions are sold separately and switched on by whoever owns the account. If you are a guest on somebody else’s call — the situation most people are in — you cannot enable them even if you are willing to pay, because the setting is not yours to touch.

An extension changes who is in control. Trippi runs on your side of the call: it captions and translates what you hear, on any Zoom meeting you can open, whether or not the host has bought anything.

Zoom in a browser tab

Trippi works on Zoom opened in the browser, not in the desktop app. When you click a Zoom invite, the join page offers a small “Join from your browser” link under the download prompt — that is the one to use. The meeting then runs in a tab, with the same video and audio, and the caption overlay sits on top of it.

The desktop app is a separate program that a browser extension cannot see into. That limit is worth knowing before you rely on it for an important call.

It hears the call, it does not join it

No participant is added, no recording consent dialog appears for anyone, and the host is not notified. The translated line is drawn in your tab only — a private subtitle track for a call everybody else experiences unchanged.

What you need to start

  • A Zoom meeting joined from the browser, in Chrome or another Chromium-based browser.
  • No Zoom licence, no add-on, no admin rights — not even a Zoom account for most meetings.
  • The spoken language and your reading language, set once in the popup.
  • 20 free minutes a month, with no card and no sign-up.

Frequently asked questions

Does Zoom translate captions for free?+

No. Zoom’s translated captions are a paid add-on enabled by the account owner, so a guest on somebody else’s meeting cannot turn them on at all.

Does this work in the Zoom desktop app?+

Not yet. Trippi captions Zoom running in a browser tab. On the join screen, choose “Join from your browser” instead of opening the app.

Do I need to be the host?+

No. Trippi works from your side of the call and needs nothing from the host or the account owner.

Will the host know I am using it?+

No. Nothing joins the meeting and no notification is sent — the overlay exists only in your browser.
