Whereby has captions — but they never translate.

Whereby does have live captions, and they are worth being precise about: they exist only in Whereby Embedded, the product developers build on, on the Build and Grow plans at $0.024 a minute. The documentation is explicit that this is speech-to-text in the language being spoken, not translation. If you joined an ordinary Whereby room from a link, there is no caption switch at all, and there is no plan you can upgrade to that adds one.

It matches how Whereby already works

The whole point of Whereby is that a guest clicks a link and is in the room — no account, no installer, no admin. A translation tool that needs a bot invited to the call, or a workspace administrator to turn something on, breaks exactly the thing people chose Whereby for.

Trippi is on the same side of that line. It lives in your browser, it starts from the toolbar, and the room does not learn anything about it. The host does not have to agree, because there is nothing for them to agree to.

Captions for a room that has none

Because Whereby rooms have no caption layer of their own, there is nothing for Trippi to conflict with or to scrape. It takes the audio of the tab, recognises the speech itself and draws the line underneath — so the same setup works whether you are the host on a paid plan or a guest who arrived from a calendar invite.

It can show the recognised original above the translation. On a call with two or three accents that is the difference between doubting the whole sentence and seeing that one name was misheard.

What you need to start

  • The Whereby room open in a browser tab — Chrome, Edge, Brave or Opera on a computer.
  • No Whereby plan, no admin, no invitation accepted by the host.
  • The language you hear and the language you want to read, set once in the popup.
  • The free tier gives 25 minutes of live translation a month, with no card and no account.

Frequently asked questions

Does Whereby translate captions itself?+

No. Whereby’s live captions exist only in Whereby Embedded, on the Build and Grow plans, and the documentation describes them as speech-to-text in the language being spoken. There is no translation into another language, on any plan.

Do I need to be the host?+

No. Trippi runs in your browser on the tab you are already in, so a guest who joined from a link uses it exactly like the host does.

Will the room see the subtitles?+

No. They are drawn only on your screen. Nothing joins the room and nobody is notified.

Does it work in the Whereby mobile app?+

No. Trippi is a Chrome and Edge extension, so the room has to be open in a browser tab on a computer.

What does it cost?+

Free to start — 25 minutes a month without a card. Paid plans begin at $6 a month for 10 hours, see pricing.
