WhatsApp has no captions at all — in any language.

Since July 2026 WhatsApp Web places and receives voice and video calls, group calls included, straight from a browser tab. What it still has nowhere is captions: no transcript, no subtitle track, and no translation on any side of the call. Trippi adds that layer in your browser, free to start.

The call your family actually uses

Work meetings moved to Meet, Zoom and Teams, and all three eventually shipped some form of captions. The calls that never moved — a parent abroad, a partner’s relatives, a landlord, a clinic in another country — stayed on WhatsApp, which has no captions of any kind. The people on those calls are the ones least likely to share a fluent language, and they are the ones with the least help available.

Trippi does not care that the call is personal rather than corporate. It listens to the tab, recognises the speech and writes a translated line under every sentence, the same way it does on a standup.

Browser tab, not the phone and not the desktop app

Calling from WhatsApp Web is new: until the middle of 2026 the web client could only chat, and a call meant a phone or the standalone desktop program. Now web.whatsapp.com rings in an ordinary tab, with ordinary tab audio — which is exactly and only what a browser extension can reach.

The phone app and the installed desktop program are separate software, and no browser extension can see inside them. If you want subtitles, take the call in the browser: open WhatsApp Web, link it to your phone once, and answer there.

Names and nicknames are where translation slips

Family speech is full of the things machine translation handles worst: nicknames, half-sentences, place names, two languages inside one sentence. Trippi can show the recognised original above the translation, so when a name comes out as a common noun you can see it happen instead of quietly misunderstanding it.

Nothing joins the chat

No participant is added, nobody is notified, and no recording indicator appears. WhatsApp calls are end-to-end encrypted and Trippi does not touch that: it captions the sound already playing out of your own speakers, in your own browser, and the other side sees the call exactly as before.

• Your phone linked to WhatsApp Web once, the way you would to read messages there.
• The language you hear and the language you want to read, set once in the popup.
