How to get a Microsoft Teams transcript in Tamil
Trippi Notes team · facts checked on 2026-10-01
Microsoft Teams does not transcribe Tamil. Its list of supported spoken languages for transcription and live captions runs from Arabic to Welsh, and Tamil is not on it (Microsoft Support, checked on 1 October 2026). Below: why the usual workarounds fall short, and how to get a Tamil transcript from Teams in the browser.
What Teams does offer in Tamil
Not much. Teams uses one list of spoken languages for both transcription and live captions (Microsoft Support: live captions), and Tamil is not on it. Live translated captions and translated transcripts are Teams Premium features on the organizer’s licence, but they start from the spoken language Teams recognises (Microsoft Learn), so they do not help when the speech is in Tamil.
The admin cannot fix it either: the Transcription policy turns the feature on or off, it does not add languages.
What people try instead
- Picking a nearby language. Teams asks for the spoken language when transcription starts and writes in that language. Choosing English for a call in Tamil does not give you Tamil text.
- Uploading a recording to a transcription service. The recording sits in the organizer’s storage. It works only if the call was recorded and the file is shared with you, and everyone has to agree to being recorded.
- One person takes notes. Fine for a short call. In a long one the note taker stops taking part, and the notes say what they understood.
Who needs this
Tamil speakers in Chennai, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia run IT services firms and family businesses with clients abroad. Internal calls switch between Tamil and English, and the client wants the outcome in English.
How Trippi Notes writes a Tamil transcript
- 1Open Teams in the browser. Open the meeting link and choose Continue on this browser. Microsoft supports Teams on the web in Edge and Chrome.
- 2Click the Trippi Notes icon. Click the icon in the Chrome toolbar once the call starts. Chrome lets the extension hear the tab only after that click.
- 3Set Tamil as the language you hear. Choose தமிழ் on the language bar. It is a hint, not a lock: if someone switches to English, that is written down too.
- 4Turn on translation if you want it. Tick translation and pick the language you read best. Each line then gets a second line in that language.
- 5Read the notes after the call. The transcript with names and times, a summary, tasks with owners and a follow-up draft are in your journal.
The transcript is written in Tamil, as it was said, with the speaker’s name and the time on every line. The summary is written in the language you read: the one you translate into, or your browser’s language if translation is off. No bot joins the call and no participant is added. Still, tell people you are taking notes. It is good manners, and in some places it is the law: AI note taker consent.
What a line looks like
Karthik, 15:55
புதிய விலைப்புள்ளியை வெள்ளிக்கிழமைக்குள் அனுப்புகிறோம்.We will send the new quotation by Friday.
The Tamil line is what was said; the line under it is the translation, shown when translation into English is on. After the call, a line like this becomes a decision or a task with an owner in the summary, and Ask AI answers questions about the call with quotes that jump back to the moment.
Notes on Tamil
- Tamil and English mixed. Office Tamil borrows English words all the time. The language you set is a hint, not a lock, so mixed sentences are written down.
- Indian and Sri Lankan Tamil. There is one entry, தமிழ். Accents differ; check names and numbers.
Tamil on the other platforms
Google Meet does not transcribe Tamil either, though its live captions list it, marked beta. Zoom has the same gap: Zoom transcript in Tamil. The whole picture is in the language table.
What Trippi Notes does with a Tamil call
A transcript in Tamil with names and times, an optional translation line in your language, and after the call a summary by template — overview, decisions, tasks with owners, open questions. Export as Markdown or plain text, or open the meeting in ChatGPT or Claude. Honest limits: it works in Chrome on a computer, with Microsoft Teams in the browser, not the desktop app, and it writes what plays in the meeting tab.
