Meeting transcripts
How to get a Google Meet transcript
Trippi Notes team · facts checked on 2026-10-01
Google Meet writes transcripts only on paid Google Workspace editions, only in eight languages, and only into the organizer’s Drive. If you have that, it is three clicks. If you use a personal Gmail account, or you are a guest in someone else’s meeting, you need your own way. Both are below.
Who can use Meet transcripts
Transcripts are a premium Meet feature. Google lists these editions: Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Teaching and Learning Upgrade, Education Plus and Workspace Individual (Google Meet Help: use transcripts). A personal Google account does not have it, and neither does Business Starter.
Who presses the button depends on host management. If it is off, anyone from the host’s domain can start a transcript. If it is on, only the host and co-hosts can. Google names only people from the host’s domain, so a guest from another organization should not expect to have the button.
Transcripts work in Meet on a computer or on Android.
How to start one
- 1Start transcription. In the meeting, click Meeting tools at the bottom right → Transcribe → Start transcription, then Start in the pop-up.
- 2Let the call finish. Transcription stops by itself when everyone leaves. Each start makes a separate file.
When a transcript is running, a Transcripts icon shows at the top right for everyone in the meeting. A host can also set a meeting to transcribe on its own from the start, under Video call options → Meeting records; people who join then see a warning.
Where the transcript is saved
The transcript is a Google Docs file (Google Workspace Admin Help) in the organizer’s Drive — not yours, even if you started it.
- 1Open the email or the calendar event. The host, co-hosts and the person who started it get an email with a link. The transcript is also attached to the calendar event.
- 2Find it in Drive. The file is a Google Docs document in the organizer’s Drive, in the Google Meet folder, in a sub-folder for that meeting.
One change in 2026: new transcripts go to a folder called Google Meet, with one sub-folder per meeting. From July 2026 the old Meet Recordings folder is renamed Legacy Meet Recordings and moved inside it. If a guide tells you to look in Meet Recordings, look there for old meetings only.
Everyone invited from the host’s organization can open the attachment on the calendar event. If more than 200 people from the organization were invited, only the host, co-hosts and the person who started the transcript can open it. Long meetings take longer to process, so give the email time.
Languages
Meet transcribes English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. The last seven were added on 12 March 2025 (Google Workspace Updates). A meeting in Polish, Hindi or Arabic gets no Meet transcript.
The transcript is not translated. Translated captions exist on some paid editions, but they are live, on screen, during the call (Google Meet Help: translated captions). For a written translation see translate a meeting transcript.
Without Workspace, or as a guest
If you are on a personal account, a guest in another company’s meeting, or the call is in a language Meet does not transcribe, the built-in transcript is not an option. Asking the organizer to share the Doc works when they made one.
The other way is to keep your own. Trippi Notes is a Chrome extension: open the Meet call in Chrome, click the Trippi Notes icon, and from that click it hears the meeting tab and writes each line with the speaker’s name and the time, in any of 68 speech languages. No bot joins and no Workspace edition is needed. The transcript stays with you, in your journal, not in someone else’s Drive.
Still, tell people you are taking notes. It is good manners, and in some places it is the law: AI note taker consent.
What Trippi Notes does with a Meet call
Transcript with names and times; a translation line under each line if you want it; after the call a summary by template with decisions, tasks with owners and open questions; a follow-up email draft you send yourself; and Ask AI about this meeting or across all meetings in your journal. Export as Markdown or plain text, or open it in ChatGPT or Claude.
