A Zoom transcript when you are not the host
Trippi Notes team · facts checked on 2026-10-17
Zoom has two kinds of transcript, and both belong to the host. The cloud-recording transcript needs a paid plan and a recording the host started. The in-meeting transcript needs the host or the admin to turn it on. If you joined someone else’s meeting, you usually walk away with nothing but memory.
What Zoom gives a participant
| What | Who controls it | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud recording transcript | Host, on a paid plan, cloud recording only | A file the host can share if they choose |
| In-meeting transcript | Host or admin turns it on | A view during the call; saving depends on settings |
| Captions | Host enables them | Text on screen that is not kept |

What you can do without the host
Join the meeting from your browser instead of the Zoom app (the “join from your browser” link under the app prompt), click the Trippi Notes icon, and the transcript writes itself in your tab: each line with the speaker’s name and the time. Nothing joins the meeting. The host sees the same participants as before.
It is your transcript, so you can read it live, search it after, ask questions about it, and get a summary and tasks from it. Tell people you are taking notes; a sentence at the start is enough. What to say.
If the host turned the browser option off
Some hosts switch off “join from your browser”. Then the meeting opens only in the app, and Trippi Notes cannot hear it. Ask the host to allow the browser join for the next call; it is one setting on their side.
A meeting in another language
If the host speaks a language you follow with effort, turn on the translation line. Each sentence appears in your language under the original. Live translation on Zoom.
How to start
- 1Open the call in Chrome. Google Meet, Zoom in the browser, or Teams in the browser.
- 2Click the Trippi Notes icon. From that click it hears the meeting tab and your microphone, and writes each line with the speaker’s name.
- 3Read along, or read it after. The lines appear as people speak. After the call you get a summary, tasks and a follow-up draft.
What you get on a Zoom call in the browser
A live transcript with names and times in 68 languages, your own microphone included, an optional translation line, and after the call a summary, tasks and a follow-up draft. It does not work in the Zoom desktop app and does not keep the audio.
