Table stakes is the minimum, not the differentiator

Sergei Skrylkov, Founder, Trippi · facts checked against the product on 2026-09-30

Table stakes are the minimum you need just to take part. The phrase comes from poker, where the table stakes are the money you must put down to be dealt in at all. “SQL is table stakes for this role” means everyone we talk to has it, so it does not count in your favour. When an interviewer calls something table stakes, they are telling you to spend the time on something else.

What they mean

It points in two directions. Said about you — “strong communication is table stakes here” — it is not an insult; it is a signal that the point you are making will not decide anything. Said about a product — common in product, sales and strategy interviews — “SSO is table stakes for enterprise buyers” means a feature without which you are not even considered.

In both cases the next question is the same: fine, and beyond that?

The shape of the answer

  • Agree in half a sentence. “Agreed, that’s the entry ticket.” Do not defend it.
  • Move straight to one thing that is not table stakes: a specific experience, a domain, a result only you have.
  • Give it a number so it can be compared with other candidates.
  • When asked to sort a product’s features, name two or three minimums, then one differentiator, and say why buyers care about it.

Heard in the call

Interviewer

“Honestly, integrations with the big payroll providers are table stakes for us. What would you do beyond that?”

The answer that sounds fine

“I understand, but integrations are really important, because without them customers cannot use the product properly, and in my last role I built six of them, which was a lot of work.”

Defends the minimum after being told it is the minimum. The interviewer asked for the next thing.

The answer they wanted

“Agreed, they are the entry ticket. Beyond that, I would look at the week after an integration is switched on. At my last company, 30 percent of new accounts had a mismatch in their first payroll run, and each one became a support ticket and a nervous finance team. We built a check that compared the first run with the previous provider’s export before anything was paid. Mismatch tickets fell by two thirds, and sales started showing the check in demos. That is where I would start here.”

Accepted the minimum in five words and moved to a differentiator with a number.

Where it goes wrong

A list of requirements met — the qualifications answer

A structured answer that goes through the job ad point by point — “I have the degree, the five years, the certification” — is thorough in German interview culture. In English it is a list of table stakes, and it leaves no time for the one thing that is yours. The German page covers the difference in what gets scored.

“Actually, integrations are important” — Portuguese atualmente

If actually is doing the work of “currently”, as atualmente does, it lands in English as a correction of what the interviewer just said. After “that’s table stakes”, it sounds like an argument. The Portuguese page lists the other false friends.

Hearing stakes as risk

“The stakes are high” is a different phrase about how much you could lose. Table stakes is about the minimum to play.

Arguing the point

You may be right that the minimum is hard. The interviewer did not ask. Agree and move on.

What Trippi Cue shows here

When the interviewer says it inside a question addressed to you, the line appears in the window with its translation and a card follows: agree briefly, move to one differentiator, give it a number. The differentiator has to come from you. One line in the note before the call — the thing you did that most candidates did not — is what the card needs to point at it.

FAQ

About this phrase.

Where does “table stakes” come from?+

From poker. It is the money a player has to put on the table to be allowed into the game.

Is it rude when an interviewer says my skill is table stakes?+

No. It is information: that point will not separate you from other candidates, so use the time on one that will.

Is table stakes the same as a must-have?+

Very close. Table stakes stresses that competitors all have it too, so having it wins nothing.

How do I find my differentiator?+

Look for something specific you did with a result you can measure, and that most people applying for the same role would not have done.
