Recorded interview platforms
HireVue and the other recorded-interview tools, seen from the candidate’s chair
Sergei Skrylkov, Founder, Trippi · facts checked against the product on 2026-09-30
A one-way video interview is run by software, not by a person, and the software is chosen by the employer. The invitation usually names it — HireVue, Spark Hire, Willo, VidCruiter, Hireflix — and each one records something slightly different and says something different about what it watches. This page lists what each platform states on its own pages: what it records, what it says it monitors, and how retakes and thinking time work. It is written for the candidate who has the link and wants to know what is on the other side. It contains no advice on getting round any of it. Checked: 30 September 2026. Platforms change these pages; open the source before you rely on a line.
The table
| Platform | What it records | What it says it monitors | Retakes / thinking time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HireVue | Video answers to recorded questions (OnDemand), plus game-based and other assessments some employers add. | Its integrity page lists browser-focus loss and unexpected session changes, browser monitoring, candidate snapshots and image capture to confirm the same person stays present, limits on copy and paste, location signals and AI detection. Its candidate FAQ says answers are assessed against job-related competencies and that the video is never used to identify you. | Set by the employer per interview. The candidate pages we opened do not state defaults. | hirevue.com — platform integrity page and candidate FAQ, read September 2026 |
| Modern Hire | Now part of HireVue: HireVue announced the acquisition in May 2023. An invitation that still carries the Modern Hire name runs on the same company’s products. | See HireVue. | See HireVue. | HireVue press release, May 2023 |
| Spark Hire | Video answers; a practice recording at the start that you can review and redo. | Its candidate help pages describe the recording flow only; we found no statement there about tab or screen monitoring. | Each question shows think time, takes and a time limit, all set by the employer. When a limited think time ends, recording starts by itself. Once you submit an answer you cannot redo it, even with takes left. | Spark Hire Candidate Help Center, “How a Spark Hire one-way video interview works” and “Answering one-way video interview questions”, read September 2026 |
| Willo | Video answers to the employer’s questions. | Offers identity verification (“Willo Verified”) and describes its shortlisting as human-led — “without handing decisions over to AI”. | The employer sets the number of retakes, and can set it to zero, in which case the first recording is saved and uploaded. You can see how many retakes remain at any time. | Willo Knowledge Base, “Number of retakes”; willo.video, read September 2026 |
| VidCruiter | Video answers, or audio-only if the employer chooses; transcriptions. | Optional safeguards the employer can switch on: browser locking and IP address monitoring. Optional AI fraud detection that flags “suspicious behavior” and AI-generated responses. Optional AI scoring, with humans making the decision. | Recruiters set thinking time, recording time, number of attempts and review timers per question. | vidcruiter.com, “Pre-Recorded Video Interview Software”, read September 2026 |
| Hireflix | Video answers; automatic transcriptions. | Nothing about monitoring on the pages we opened. | Thinking time, answer time and retakes are set per question by the employer. | hireflix.com, pricing and feature list, read September 2026 |
| myInterview | One-way video answers. The myinterview.com address now presents Radancy’s screening product. | Says AI can transcribe the video and factor the answer into a screening score, and that teams use the videos to validate “candidate authenticity”. | Says candidates can review and retake recordings before submitting. | myinterview.com (Radancy), read September 2026 |
| Sapia.ai | Not video: a text chat interview, typed answers to set questions. | Runs a detector for AI-generated text. When an answer looks AI-written, the candidate sees a warning and can revise it or submit as is; flagged answers are marked for the hiring team. The company says a flag does not disqualify on its own. | Not stated on the page we opened. | Sapia.ai blog, “Keeping interviews real with next-gen AI detection”, read September 2026 |
Three things are consistent across the list. The employer, not the platform, decides the numbers you will see — takes, thinking time, answer length — so two invitations on the same platform can look different. Monitoring is increasingly optional and switched on per employer, which is why the platform’s page describes it as a feature for employers rather than a rule for you. And AI appears on both sides: as a scorer or note-taker the employer may use, and as something the platform tries to detect in your answers.
What to read in your invitation
- The platform’s name. It tells you which row above applies. If it says Modern Hire, read the HireVue row.
- The rules for this interview. Many invitations state whether notes, other tabs or outside help are allowed. What the employer wrote is the rule for that round, whatever the platform can or cannot detect.
- Takes and thinking time. Usually shown on the first question screen. If the practice question is available, use it: it shows the exact timer you will face.
- Accommodations. If you need more time, extra takes or a different format, ask the recruiter before you start. HireVue’s own FAQ mentions asking for questions in advance as one option; Willo’s help page tells employers that many neurodiverse candidates need more retakes.
Why a live copilot does not belong here
A recorded round has no conversation: the question is on the screen already, and the employer has usually set its own rules for it. Our position on this is on the responsible use page, and the practical side of preparing — the practice question, the timer, where to look — is on one-way video interviews. The honest way to get better at a recorded round is to rehearse on camera with the same timer until the first thirty seconds feel routine.
Where Trippi Cue stands
Trippi Cue is a Chrome extension for live calls in Google Meet, Zoom on the web and Microsoft Teams on the web. It starts only when you click its icon in the call’s tab, listens to that tab’s audio, never asks for the microphone, and does not hide itself: its window is drawn in your page and anyone you share that tab with can see it. None of the platforms above is a live call, and Cue is not built for them. We say so here rather than leave you to find out in the middle of a timed answer.
FAQ
About recorded rounds.
Can a one-way interview platform see my other tabs?+
Some say they can tell when the interview tab loses focus: HireVue lists browser-focus loss, and VidCruiter offers employers browser locking. Others describe nothing of the kind on their pages. What they can see is set by the employer, so read the invitation.
Is HireVue scored by AI?+
Sometimes. HireVue’s FAQ describes assessments that evaluate answers against job-related competencies, and says hiring decisions are made by people after that first cut. It also says the video is never used to identify you. Whether your employer uses scoring is their choice.
Is Modern Hire the same as HireVue now?+
The two companies are one: HireVue announced the acquisition of Modern Hire in May 2023.
Can I redo an answer?+
Only if the employer allowed retakes for that question, and only before you submit it. Spark Hire and Willo both show how many takes remain on screen.
Does Trippi Cue work in HireVue or Spark Hire?+
No. Cue is for live calls in Meet, Zoom on the web and Teams on the web. A recorded interview is not a call, and we do not offer Cue for it.
