Google Meet is the easiest platform to interview on and the easiest to get slightly wrong, because it needs nothing installed and so nobody tests it. The link opens in a browser tab, the interviewer admits you from a lobby, and the whole call lives in that one tab. That last fact is the useful one: everything that can read a browser tab — captions, translation, a copilot — works in Meet without any setup. This checklist is about the things that are true only on Meet.
Step 1. The link, and the account behind it
A Meet link opens in the browser. If you are signed in to a Google account, the call will use it, name and photo included. Check which one: a personal account with a nickname from 2011 is the first thing the interviewer sees in the lobby. Sign in to the account you want to be seen as before you open the link, or use a fresh browser profile. If the invitation says the host must admit you, you will wait in a lobby. Join five minutes early; the recruiter sees the queue and admits you when the previous call ends.
Step 2. Laptop, not phone
Meet works on a phone, and the search results are full of people asking whether a phone is acceptable. It is acceptable; it is worse. The frame shakes, the audio is the phone’s, and nothing that helps you — a second window, live text, your notes — fits on the screen. If a laptop exists, use it. If the phone is the only option, prop it at eye level, landscape, and plug in.
Step 3. Audio: the setting that Meet hides
Meet picks the microphone and speaker by itself and often picks the laptop while your headset sits unused. In the three-dot menu → Settings → Audio, choose the headset for both. Do this inside the call preview, where the level meter is visible. Meet’s noise cancellation is on by default on most accounts and is good; leave it.
Step 4. What the other side sees
The camera. Nothing else, until you click Present now. If a technical round asks you to present, present a tab — the coding exercise — not the entire screen. Everything in other tabs and windows stays on your side. That is the plain answer to the question people search for: notes in another window are not visible unless you share the whole screen.
Step 5. Captions, and captions in your language
Meet has built-in captions in the spoken language — the CC button — and translated captions only on paid Workspace tiers, decided by the host’s account, not yours. Most interviews are hosted by companies on plans where translated captions are off. For a candidate, the practical route is an extension that reads the tab. Step 6. The last minute

Water off camera.
If Meet misbehaves
“You can’t join this call” usually means the host restricted the meeting to their organisation; ask the recruiter to admit you from the lobby or to open it. A frozen video with live audio is a bandwidth problem — turn your camera off for thirty seconds and back on. If you drop, the same link puts you back.

About the platform.
Can I do a Google Meet interview on my phone?+
Yes, and it is worse than a laptop in every way that matters: framing, audio, and no room for anything that helps you. Use a laptop if one exists.
Do I need a Google account to join a Meet interview?+
Usually not — the host can admit guests from the lobby. If the meeting is restricted to the company’s organisation, the recruiter has to change that or send a different link.
Can the interviewer see my other tabs?+
No. They see your camera until you present, and then only the tab or window you chose.
Does Meet translate the interview?+
Built-in translated captions exist only on some paid Workspace plans and are controlled by the host. An extension that reads the tab, such as Trippi Cue, translates for you regardless of the host’s plan.
Is an AI helper allowed in a Google Meet interview?+
That is the interviewer’s rule, not Meet’s. Our position is on the responsible use page: it depends on what you were told, and the extension does not hide itself from anyone.
