Microsoft Teams is the platform most corporate interviews run on and the one candidates know least, because it lives inside companies. The first question is always the same — do I need an account — and the answer is no. The second is where the audio settings are. The third, increasingly, is whether the “Teams interview” in your inbox is real. This checklist is the Teams-only part of interview preparation.
Step 1. Join as a guest, in the browser
A Teams invitation contains a Join the meeting now link. Opening it offers three routes: download the app, open the app if installed, or Continue on this browser. For an interview, the browser is the right choice unless the company told you otherwise: no install on a work laptop, and the call lives in a tab that other tools can read. Without a Microsoft account you join as a guest: type your name as you want it shown, and wait in the lobby until the interviewer admits you. Use the name on your CV. Guest joining is on by default for most organisations; if the link refuses you, the company’s admin has turned it off and the recruiter needs to send a different link or add you as an external attendee. Three addresses exist: teams.microsoft.com for work and school tenants, teams.live.com for personal accounts, teams.cloud.microsoft for tenants Microsoft has moved. They behave the same; only the URL differs.
Step 2. Audio and camera in the pre-join screen
Teams shows a pre-join screen with camera preview and device choices. Pick the headset for microphone and speaker there; Teams is worse than Meet at guessing. Check the background option: Blur is fine, and Teams’ blur is the most stable of the three platforms. Corporate interviewers on Teams tend to be more formal than on Meet — the search results ask about attire for a reason. Dress as you would for the office you are applying to.
Step 3. Is this Teams interview real?
Fake “Teams interviews” are a common scam: an unsolicited message, a link to a Teams chat rather than a meeting, an “interview” conducted in text, and a request for personal or bank details for “onboarding”. Real interviews have a calendar invitation with a meeting link, a named person from a company domain, and a video call with a human in it. If any of those is missing, stop and check the company’s careers page.
Step 4. What the other side sees
Your camera, until you share. When a round asks you to share, share a window, not the screen. Teams also shows the interviewer whether you are on the browser or the app — nothing more. Other windows, other tabs, notes: not visible unless you share the display they are on.
Step 5. Live text and help with the questions
Teams has built-in live captions in the spoken language, and translated captions only with a Teams Premium licence on the organiser’s side, which is rare for hiring. For a candidate who wants the interviewer’s lines in their own language, the route is an extension reading the tab. Trippi Cue does that: with Teams open in the browser, click its icon in Chrome. On Teams, Chrome will ask once for permission to run the extension on the Teams address — allow it — and from then on it listens to the tab’s audio, shows each line as recognised with a translation under it, and puts up a short card when a question is addressed to you. The card is a structure to answer from, written from the last minutes of the conversation and from the note you typed before the call. Nothing joins the meeting, no participant appears, and your microphone is not used. It does not hear the Teams desktop app. Step 1 is why.
Step 6. The last minute
Join ten minutes early; Teams lobbies are slower than Meet’s, and some tenants show the interviewer a waiting list only when they open the meeting. One tab with the call, one with the job description. Close Outlook — its notifications are audible. If you use Trippi Cue, write the note first, then click the icon after you are admitted.
If Teams misbehaves
“We’re sorry — we’ve run into an issue” on join is usually a browser problem: try a fresh window or a different Chromium browser. No audio from the other side: check the speaker choice in the ⋯ menu → Device settings; Teams sometimes resets it on join. Dropped: the same link puts you back in the lobby.
