Google Drive has quietly become a decent video player: captions arrived in 2024 and transcripts in early 2025, so a video in a shared folder can show you the words that were said. What it still does not do, in any form, is translate them. The captions come in the language of the audio and stay there — and since Drive is where Google Meet recordings land, this is the default resting place for a great many meetings nobody could follow in the first place.
Where Meet recordings end up
A recorded Google Meet call does not stay in Meet; it becomes a file in Drive. That is the moment the meeting stops being a meeting and becomes a video in a folder, and it is also the moment every translation feature people associate with Meet stops applying to it.
Trippi treats it as what it now is — a tab playing audio — and writes the translated line underneath while it runs.
Shared folders, mixed languages
Drive is where teams put the recordings nobody attended: onboarding sessions, regional all-hands, a walkthrough someone recorded once and shared. They accumulate, and they are almost never re-recorded in another language.
Because it runs per viewer, everyone can read the same file in a different language, and nothing about the file, its captions or its sharing settings changes for anyone else.
What it will not do
- It does not translate the existing caption track. If a file already has good captions in a language you read, you do not need us.
- It does not add captions to the file. What you turn on is visible only to you.
- It cannot open files you do not have access to — the video has to play in your browser first.

Does Google Drive translate video captions?+
No. Drive shows captions and transcripts in the language spoken in the video. There is no translation into another language.

Do I need to own the file?+
No. Viewing access is enough — the extension works on the tab, not on the file.
