Translate a Bilibili live — while it is happening.

Bilibili has AI subtitles — for videos. The live room has none.

Bilibili has invested heavily in AI captioning and even AI dubbing, and for uploaded videos it shows. Live rooms are a different product: when a VTuber, a musician or a gamer is broadcasting right now, there are no AI subtitles to switch on. The translation features people have read about apply to content that already finished. For a live, the only text on screen is danmaku flying past in Chinese.

Live is the part the AI has not reached

It is worth being precise, because the gap is narrow and specific: Bilibili can caption and even dub finished videos, and its international app added AI dubbing for them. None of that is available in a live room while the stream is running.

Trippi works only on the live case, which is the one left uncovered. It takes the audio of the tab and writes the translated line underneath, so a live room reads in English, Spanish, Indonesian or any of the other 66 languages.

For an audience that is already there

Bilibili’s live rooms carry a lot of what non-Chinese fandoms follow — VTubers, anime events, game broadcasts — and the audience already knows how to find them. What it does not have is a way to understand them in real time without waiting for someone to clip and subtitle the highlights afterwards.

The recognised original can stay above the translation, which matters for character names and game terminology, where machine translation reliably produces something confident and wrong.

What it will not do

• It does not translate danmaku or the chat — only the speech.
• It does not work in the Bilibili mobile app; the live room has to be open in a browser tab.
• For a finished video with an existing subtitle track, a subtitle translator will be faster and more accurate than we are.
