SOOP, the platform formerly called AfreecaTV, has gone further than most on translation: chat is translated automatically, without anyone pressing anything, and official broadcasts — esports tournaments, staged events — get AI speech-to-text with translation into several languages. The gap is everything else. On an ordinary streamer’s channel, the place where the audience actually spends its evenings, the speech is not captioned at all, and no setting on your side changes that.

The everyday channel is the whole point

The tournaments are the streams most likely to get an official translation and least likely to need one, because esports is watchable through the game itself. The channels that are hard to follow are the ones where somebody talks for four hours — and those are exactly the ones the AI captions do not cover.

Trippi does not distinguish between them. It captures the tab audio, so an official event and a personal broadcast get the same treatment, in whichever of 66 languages you picked.

Chat translated, speech not — a strange half-state

Having the chat arrive in your language while the person speaking stays incomprehensible is a peculiar experience: you can read the audience reacting to something you did not catch. Adding speech subtitles closes the loop, and the two do not conflict, because Trippi listens to the audio and never touches the chat panel.

The recognised original can stay above the translation, which is worth keeping on when a streamer is reading Korean usernames out loud.
